Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement

“It is our duty to concentrate all our influence to make popular that which is sound and good, and (to make) unpopular that which is unsound (and not good).”

-Joseph Smith

Reflection

I believe that each of us have a duty in this world. I agree with joseph. It is our doing to make this world a better place. According to joseph we need to make the good popular among us and try to get rid of all the bad. This is our duty, to have more good than bad.

Examples

I can use crime as an example. Our duty is to make this world a better place. With one not being a criminal and choosing the right, we are doing our duties.

Another example would be to help others out. That would spread good instead of bad.

9…. Don’t cram for exams. Successful Students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it.

If there is one thing that study skills specialists agree on it, it is that distributed study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming, you’ll learn more, remember more, and earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a-night sessions for Fridays exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Short, concentrated preparatory efforts are more efficient and rewarding than wasteful, inattentive, last moment marathons. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating it over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh?

When you cram, you are taking the shortcut, and shortcuts never [reduce any real worthwhile results. Also, when you take shortcuts, you feel rather rotten knowing that you could have done better but didn’t. Shortcuts cut you short. You can’t plant watermelon seeds and harvest fresh watermelons the next day. It takes time. Cramming for a test or project and expecting to make a high score the next day is like planting watermelon seeds and expecting to harvest and eat fresh watermelon the next day. Plus cramming from a test or project doesn’t help you academically, so why even do it. Plan ahead, prepare ahead. Give yourself plenty of days and weeks to prepare for upcoming accountability opportunities.

High School Graduation- Pleasure or Pain

Reflection: Graduation may be a wonderful experience, a day to always remember. All the hard work finally paying off. One works really hard to graduate, and on that day one realizes that they have come some far and achieved a great accomplishment. You can have a great time on your graduation and feel great about it, but what about if you don’t graduate? How would that make you feel? Think about it, watching all your classmates and friends you’ve hanged around with for four years, graduate, yet you aren’t there graduating with them. One will suffer and wish to be graduating and walking that stage as well. For many this is sadly the case. They watch they’re friends graduate, but don’t get to live or experience it. One should always choose the right and meet the requirements for graduating so that they’ll get the chance to live the wonderful experience.

5. Don’t sit in the back of the room. Successful students minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning.

Students want the best seat available from their entertainment dollars, but willingly seek the worst seat of their educational dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their professor’s teammate See no.4). Why do they expose themselves to the temptations of inactive classroom experiences and distractions of all the people between them and their instructor? Of course, we know they chose the back of the classroom because they seek invisibility or anonymity, both of which are antithetical to efficient and effective learning. If you are trying not to be part of the class, why, then, are you wasting your time? Push your hot buttons; is there something else you should be doing with your time?

6. … take good notes. Successful students take notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often.

Why put something into your notes you don’t understand? Ask the questions now that are necessary to make your notes meaningful at some later time. A short review of your notes while the material is still fresh on your mind helps you to learn more. The more you learn then, the less you’ll have to learn later and the less time it will take because you own have to include some deciphering time, also. The whole purpose of taking notes is to use them, and use them often. The more you use them, the more they improve.

“The time is always right to do what is right.”

-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Reflection: This statement has “right” written all over it. There is never a wrong time to do what’s right. No matter what day it is, no matter what time during the day it is, the right should always be done. There is no excuse to choose otherwise since the right should always be done.

Example: an example of “the time is always right to do what is right would be even if you’re going through a tuff time, no matter how hard life gets for you, that doesn’t mean it is time to choose the wrong. The country is in a difficult time economically. Many of us are affected by it. This does not mean that one will go and rob a bank. ALWAYS choose the right.

Successful Students 3-4

3.... ask questions. Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge. In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. The process helps you pay attention to your professor and helps your professor pay attention to you! Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answer now, or fall a question later. There are no foolish questions, only foolish silence. It’s your choice.

4 . . . . learn that a student and a professor make a team. Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn good grade.

Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justible pride teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not an enemy, and you share the same interests, the same goals – in short, your teammates. Get to know your professor. You’re the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

“My strength is as the strength of ten because my heart is pure.”

-Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Reflection: I believe this is a very strong and true statement. Alfred claims that his strength is equal to ten people. He says this is because he keeps a pure heart. I believe keeping a pure heart is the most important thing in life. Having a pure heart is something that is valuable and everyone should take pride in. because of that, Alfred feels with a great amount of strength. It takes a lot from someone to keep their heart pure, and not anyone can do it. One is strong by keeping a pure heart.

English, math, foreign language tips: PRACTICE—especially foreign language. It is hard to succeed in a foreign language class if you are just showing and doing the work. But if you are in your room and look at objects and try to say them in the language you are learning it actually helps. Or if you send a simple text to a friend think about it, can you translate that to German or Spanish? These are the little things that will help.

Here are my final words of wisdom for students who want to get better grades in college: time management and organization are critical key factors to success in college. And never be afraid to go ask your teacher for help. They have office hours for a reason-use them!

Tennessee Walking Horse

Tennessee Walking Horse

Summary: Jackie McConnell, upon many brutal trainers handles these horses. Because of their humbleness, these horses are known as gentle giants. After an investigation, the truth arose. Horse trainers are training these horses inhumanely. They do this by adding harmful substances to the horse’s feet. This makes the horse walk in an unnatural way. The trainers do this to prepare them for the competition. Rich horse owners pay trainers such as McConnell to train their horses just to dominate the competition. This has gotten very out of hand. On the last competition, all the horses were found with these harmful chemicals in their feet.

Reflection: This is obviously wrong and it’s not a secret. It makes me angry that the truth is exposed yet they are not stopped. These cruel trainers shouldn’t be able to even get near these helpless animals. It makes me angry and upset. Justice has to be served. No animal should have to go through such a traumatizing experience.

Study for Multiple Exams Part 2

Study for Multiple Exams

Part2

My strategies for written assignments: everyone has their own writing styles. I generally come up with an idea and do massive amounts of research then sometimes prepare an outline before actually writing. I always print out the paper and come back to the next day and reread it. That is the easiest way for me to catch my own mistakes. I have to give my eyes a break from it, and if I just wrote it I think it looks perfect. But I look at it a day; later I almost always find grammatical errors or phrases and sentences I just want to reword.

How I succeed in team projects: never assume someone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. Have regular meetings and have each member show their work, not just give you or the group their word for it.

Study for Multiple Exams Part 1

Study for Multiple Exams

Part 1

How I study for multiple exams, deal with multiple projects: really it is my time management that I explained above. If I see I have multiple things due or to study for all at the same time it spread out time beforehand. For example, if I have a test Monday, and 2 test Tuesday then I will study I will study for my Monday test Thursday and part of Friday. Start studying for my next test on the second half of Friday and part of Saturday, then my second Tuesday test on Saturday as well and part of Sunday. Then Sunday night I can review for my Monday test because I already studied for it. When that test is over I can begin reviewing for the other tests. My overall study method: I try to break it up over several days or at least two. I get bogged down if I try to pull in an all-nighter. How I’ve overcome an initial bad grade: if I received a low grade I probably knew it was coming because I didn’t prepare properly or I did use the right study habit for that class. I usually try to go over what I did wrong and sometime discuss with the teacher what I can do differently on the next exam or what they suggest I do for studying for the next exam.

Summary/ reflection

Summary

Jermaine chose the wrong in so many occasions sadly. He had the great opportunity to be on American idol. Sadly this didn’t last long, since he got disqualified during mid-season. Jermaine had a dark background to uncover. Shockingly, he had a criminal record. TMZ investigated him just to find that he had been arrested for being involved in a fight in a hotel and for having a warrant. He had been pulled over many times for suspended license, disorderly conduct, and for having an open alcoholic beverage with him.

Reflection

Jermaine choose the wrong in every of these occasions. He had already gotten so far, even making it into the semifinal. Sadly, he was not able to continue due to his dark past, due to him choosing the wrong. Not only once, but various times. This is why we should always choose the right. If Jermaine had chosen the right since the beginning he could have gone much farther. He could have even been the American idol. We shouldn’t let a bad choice hold us back, especially from our dreams. It is very important to always choose the right and be on the right path, so when you get the one in a life time opportunity, you’ll be able to take full advantage of it!

Sarah’s Academic Success Story Part 1

Sarah’s Academic Success Story

Part 1

Time management became a key factor in my study skills for college. In high school, there were times I was able to study for an hour or two the night before a test and get away with it. This was not the case in college. I made sure in college I was prepared for each class. Sometimes that meant writing out the terms for the chapter we read (even if when it isn’t required) to better understand them. That way when the midterm or test comes around I was able to understand what I was studying. I started taking excellent notes in class in college. I may have done this in high school, but in college I started typing up the notes after class. This helped me remember what I just went over in class then when I had a test one week later I was more likely to remember then as well.

My overall study method: Structured. One thing I learned was I had to adapt or change my study method according to the class. I couldn’t study for a Religion Class the same way I studied for a Finance class. But making sure I had enough time to study for each class—even if it meant carrying a planner with me at all times was a big part of my success.

Work Together Part 1

Work Together

Part 1

I can and will work as part of the team as long as everyone in the team is willing to do his work. I don’t like having to pick up the slack, but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was the longest paper I had ever been assigned and I was a little scared. Also, it was the first paper where they were like; here you go, just write about something. I had to argue in favor of or against something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on this paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research or writing. I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just under 12 pages but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week or so later, I had received the first A+ of my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserved. I was really happy and proud of myself.

“Try a little harder to be a little better.”

-Gordon B. Hinckley

Reflection

This statement is very true. One does not have to be good all at once. Little by little we can be a better person. It doesn’t take a lot of hard work to be a better person. If you take the process my sections then it won’t feel like it took a lot of hard work. We are not expected to be a good person all at once. It all takes time, just make sure to strive for it.

You can Succeed Everyday Part 2

You can Succeed Everyday

Part 2

My strategies for written assignments: I try to outline before I write because otherwise I forget. How I succeed in team projects: Personally, I do not like working on group projects, especially ones that I worked on in high school. However, when it is required to work in a group, usually I try to lead. I like taking the lead because then I know that my grade will be a good one. I do well in school. I always have and I don’t plan on changing that anytime soon, so when I need to work with people who maybe don’t care as much as I do, or they have more time to waste on things other than the projects, I try to be in charge. That way I know that things are going to get done on time and that I am going to get a good grade. If I am working in a group of people who all want to work, then it is a different story.

Summary/Reflection

Summary

Tiger Woods is a great golf player. He is worldwide known as one of the best gold players alive. Because of his great talent, he has great fortune. Tiger Woods has a step brother who today suffers from multiple seirsis. Suffering and unable to work, he tried reaching out to Tiger. According to his step brother’s family, tiger would not respond to his. They claim that he ignores all calls and they haven’t spoke to Tiger since his father’s death in 2005.

Reflection

I believe that there may be a reason why Tiger Woods refused to communicate with his step brother. I don’t believe that it is because he is selfish. Nevertheless, Tiger shouldn’t ignore his step brother in a situation like this. His step brother is in need and it is immature to keep avoiding him. After all they are related by blood.

You can Succeed Every Day Part 1

You can Succeed Every Day

Part 1

My overall study method: I break up studying over several days and over the course of the evening and day. Cramming never works for me so I try not to do it. I will have longer sessions on nights before big tests, but I never stay up much later than normal before tests. I know that if I take the test tired the next day I will not do as well as if I was rested.

How I’ve overcome an initial bad grade: I usually look over the test or paper to see what I did that the teacher did not want. Basically, I do not stress out grades that much because for me they are really not worth getting upset about. I do well because I know that I know the material. However, if I go get a bad grade, or one lower than what I expected, I make sure that he next time a test is coming I study even more so that I won’t be surprised by the questions.

Effective Study Method Part 2

Effective Study Methods

Part2

My time management secret: my secret is to use time wisely. I know that on certain days I do not have time to run errands or hang out with friends even. Each minute of each day is used for something. One thing that works really well for me is to write everything down. I mean everything. I write down if I am going to email people, write letters, or study. It works for me to have a planner that goes by the day and shows me what I am going to be doing every day. Knowing what I have to do every day helps me plan out my week and days. If I know that I don’t have time on Tuesday, I will try to get more things done on Monday or Sunday. I plan ahead, especially if I am going to me on the road for volleyball. When I am on the road, I bring my books and read on the bus /plane/hotel room. Missing class is a killer to make up from, but if you are upfront with your professors, they are usually nice about having to turn things in late or not being in class.

My Winter Break

Winter Break

Winter break was definitely too short for me. The three weeks went by way too quickly. Before I knew it, school is the next day. During my winter break I celebrated Christmas and New Year. I didn’t do much besides that. It was a great time with the family though. It was a great opportunity to bond with family and have a great time. We had so much food for the holidays. We ate, and ate, and ate. After dinner we had a good time together and shared many laughs.

The worst part of the break would have to be the fact that is spent most of it sick. I had a rough cough for about two weeks straight. I felt horrible, and didn’t feel like getting out of bed.

The worse came when I had practice, and I would have to go to practice sick. I had practice every week day in vacations except for the holidays.

Effective Study Methods Part 1

Effective Study Methods

Part 1

My test study method: when it comes time to study for the test, I usually start 2-3 days before the test. I go through my notes and make flashcards on what was important for those sections, paying special attention to what the teacher said would be on the test if there was a review session. Also, I go through the book and read the inset stories and add to my flashcards, if there are practice problems or online assignments or old tests, I use those to help me study for the test as well. Once the test is over, I keep the flashcards so that I have them for the next test or for the final. Flashcards are a marvelous learning tool. The key to remembering something is to repeat it numerous times-spaced rehearsal. If you forget something, it is because you haven’t repeated it enough times for an extended period of time. Repetition is a law of learning; therefore, to learn and remember, to recall, it is mandatory that you repeat over and over the things you desire to learn and remember. You may be thinking “oh, no, repeating something.” You need to get used to it. For example, the more you practice a song on the piano, the better you become at playing that song. Learning and remembering is like playing the piano- the more you practice saying or doing it the better you can remember it, look now at what you remember. You remember it because you have repeated it numerous time since first being exposed to it. So, practice rehearsing those things you desire to remember, and they will stick with you.

Practice-->Proficiency-->Pleasure

The better you remember, the more pleasure you obtain from studying and learning.
