Student Success Statement/Reflection

Student Success Statement

“Success is dependent on effort.”

-Sophocles, Greek dramatist

Reflection

I definitely agree with this statement. I believe that the only way one can succeed is to put in effort. With effort, ANYTHING can be accomplished. Effort always pays off. When we see great basketball players in the NBA, they weren’t born that way. The hard work and effort got them to where they are today. If you does not put in effort or dedication, very little or nothing will ever get accomplished.

How to Take on College Studying Part 2

How to Take on College Studying

Part 2

Choose Where to Study

ü Where you should study depends on two factors: the environment in which you are best able to concentrate and the type of work you are planning to do.

ü The best places to study have good light, a comfortable temperature and enough desk space- usually your dorm room, you apartment or the library.

ü For completing problem sets or brainstorming possible test questions, you may want to study with a group or at least in a setting where fellow students are available for discussion,

ü When you are reading book chapters or working on a research paper, you are probably better off in a less social environment.

Here are simple steps you can take to help you get a handle on studying:

ü Have a routine for where and when you study.

ü Choose reasonable and specific goals that you can accomplish for each study sessions.

ü Do things that are harder or require more intense thought at your most productive time of the day.

ü Take breaks if you need them so you don’t waste time looking at material but not absorbing it.

ü Get to know students whom you respect and can study with or contact to ask questions.

ü Keep up with the workload and seek help when you need it.

Summary/Reflection

Summary

Deb was leading throughout the race. As she reached the finish line, she suffered a critical injury. Jenna Hub was right behind her; she had tried to pass her throughout the race but hadn’t succeeded to. She finally had her opportunity to win the race. Instead of going straight to the finish line, Jenna grabbed Deb and helped her to the finish line. She felt that it was the right thing to do and that Deb deserved to finish the race and finish before her.

Reflection

This is an amazing story that shows great sportsmanship. Jenna instead of winning the race, she helped Deb to it. Jenna did not think about herself only, and wasn’t selfish. She helped Debs because it was right, and she chose the right.

Develop Good Study Habits

In college, you’ll need to build on the study skills that you learned in high school. The demands of a college class are probably more rigorous than those you are used to.

You can succeed by knowing what to expect and how to handle it.

Think of college as a full-time job, in which you spend 40 hours a week on class, labs, study groups and doing homework.

Being organized and using your time well are essential. Learn more about time management, and use the guidelines below to develop your study skills.

Decide When to Study

Work out how many hours you need to study every day. Then make a schedule.

·        Figure out what blocks of time you have available throughout the day, in the evenings and on weekends.

“Choosing the right is always the right thing to do.”

-Alex Linares

Reflection

What this quote implies is that there is no better decision than to choice the right. If one wants to do what is right then they have to choose the right. when you choose the right, it will always be the correct choice. We sometimes have difficulty making decisions in certain situations. We should not question on what to decide on because we should always choose the right. An example would be if you missed a day from school and you choose not to make up your school work the next day. One has to choose the right and is the best choice because if not, your grade would be affected negatively.

10 Time Managing Tips For Students Tips 5-10

10 Time Management Tips for Students

Tips 5-10

Tips 5. Review Your Notes Every Day.

Reviewing helps you reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study before a test. You’ll also be ready if you get called on in class or have to take a pop quiz.

Tip 6. Get a Good Night’s Sleep.

Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. Lack of sleep makes the day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.

Tip 7. Communicate Your Schedule to Others.

If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you are only available certain times of day and not to expect a response at other times.

Tips 8. Become a Taskmaster.

Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.

Tip 9. Don’t Waste Time Agonizing

Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you’re supposed to be doing is not productive and can increase your stress.

Tip 10. Determine your Priorities.

You can’t do everything at once. Establish the importance of each item. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.

“It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.”

-Anon

Reflection

One should prefer to be alone than to have negative people around them. These people may be a negative influence, always choosing the wrong and maybe they just don’t make you happy and bring the worst out of you. There is no reason why one should have to spend time with these people. One rather stay alone and choose the right and be happy. Being with the wrong crowd may result with bad consequences. If a group of friends that you know use drugs invite you to a party, stay home that night and read a book instead. No one needs people like that in their lives.

“Improvement begins with I.”

-Anon

Reflection

The statement is making a relating reference to the word “improvement” and the letter I. What it means is that if one uses for improvement, you have to do something about it. If you don’t do anything about it then no one will. To start improving one has to begin the improvement. An example would be the improvement of our city, Huntington Park. If I wish to see improvement in our city, I need to take action. As a matter of fact, I have. I make sure not to litter. By doing so, I influence the rest to do the same. because I did something to make this city better, I have seen improvement.

Habits 7: Sharpen the Saw

3) Heart: Always do what is right so your heart, your conscience, will feel peaceful. When you do wrong, your conscience will prick you and create regretful sensations within your heart. When you do what you honestly feel, you won’t have any regrets. Your heart is your internal compass- it gives you direction and discernment. Just like a magnetic compass gives directions, even true north, your personal compass, your heart, will point you in the true north, the exact directions and paths you need to trod.

4) Soul: Study scriptures and other sacred literature daily. In other words, feel your spirit because your spirit needs spiritual food just like your physical body needs temporal food to survive. Pondering, meditating, and reflecting are excellent Soul-sharpening activities. Try writing your thoughts, feelings, aspirations, concerns, and decisions in a diary or journal. Writing helps you focus and make good decisions.

Get into the habit of daily improving your body (physical fitness) your mind, your heart, and your soul.

Reflection

This is a great story and a great example of outstanding character, loyalty and sportsmanship. Sarah had finally reach one of her goals by hitting a homerun. It was a great moment for her, but she wasn’t able to finish. Mallory and Liz carried her around the bases making sure that she finished that home run. They said “she deserved it”. This illustrates the great sportsmanship of these young ladies. They could of decided not to help her finish and maybe win the game, but they didn’t. They were loyal to themselves and to everyone else. These three girls being at a high level in academics really shows a lot about their character. They live about the line. They choose the right.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Teens should never get too busy living to take time to renew them. When teens “sharpen the saw” they are keeping their personal self-sharp so that they can better deal with life. It means regularly renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of life – body, mind, heart, and soul.

1)    Body, Ear wholesome foods, fruits, vegetables, legumes. Avoid illegal drugs, smoking, alcohol, tobacco products, tattooing. Exercise regularly and effectively. Get plenty of rest at night. Get to bed early at night and get up early each morning. “Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise.

2)    Mind. Think positively. Read. Study. Think. Analyze. Seek to read a good book each month. Then each week. Ask intelligent questions. Observe. Develop your mind through positive “self-talk”.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

-Helen Keller

Reflection

There’s no better way on working on something than with other people. What Helen Keller portrays with this quote is that when one is alone there is only so much you can do, but with the help of others those achievement dramatically increase. Putting more heads together and more ideas create something greater. Different people have different perspectives and when you put that together it gives a good result. Not only that, but when working with others you have them to lean on and support.  Maybe someone is better at one thing where the other person isn’t strong at, and it balances it out. An example would be my basketball team. When we’re on the court, we have to work as a team. If any of us try to make all the shots and not pass the ball, nothing will be done. When we communicate well and work together we win games.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 6

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens

Habits 6

Habits 6: Synergize

Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn’t have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy allows teens to value differences and better appreciate others. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking Win-Win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to form V formations with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed of how much faster and farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn’t just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is this: learn to celebrate differences.

A good band is a great example of synergy. It’s not just the drums, or the guitar, or the sax, or the vocalist, its all of them together that make up the “sound”. Each band member brings his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could alone. No instrument is more important than another, just different.

“So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the “in-group,” we lose sight of things that are far more important.”

-Sean Covey

Reflection

It is common for people to be blinded by the trends in today’s society, which make them forget about the significance in this world such as our morals and choosing the right. People do wrong things and make decisions that aren’t right just to please others.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 5

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens

Habit 5

5. Seek First to Understand, and then to be Understood

Because most people don’t listen very well, one of the great frustrations in life is that many don’t feel understood. This habit will ensure your teen learns the most important communication skill there is: active listening.

Why is this habit the key to communications? It’s because the deepest need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone watns to be respected and valued fro who they are- a unique, one-of-a-kind, never-to-be cloned individual. People won’t expose their soft middles unless they feel genuine love and understanding. Once they feel it, however, they will tell you more than you may want to hear. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Listen with your eyes, heart, and ears. 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. There rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words. or the tone and feeling reflected in our voice(40 percent).

Most people are eager to talk and had rather talk than listen. We have one mouth and two ears. This means we should listen twice as much as we talk. We actually learn more while listening rather than when we talk. Learn to listen and listen to learn. Listen, really listen, for understanding.

Seek first to understand then to be understood-LISTEN.
