Never

There is no justification ever for choosing any part of what you know to be evil.”

-Ayn Rand

(Novelist, philosopher, playwright, screenwriter)

Reflection

There is never a right time to choose the right. There is never a reason why to choose the right. If you know something is wrong and you feel like you need to make that decision, you need to think again. There is no circumstance that choosing the wrong will be needed or accepted. The wrong is wrong and we should never do wrong. No matter what the right the decision will be to choose the right. ALWAYS CHOOSE THE RIGHT.

Tip 5: Keep a List of Questions

When you feel confused about something you’re reading, write down any questions you have. Sometimes your questions are answered as you read further. If not, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, teachers create assignments; they’ve read the texts and are familiar with them. When you have specific questions, your teachers can provide answers that will help you better understand the material. Learning is rooted in questions developed and asked by the learner.

Asking questions to you, to the teacher, and to others, is a great learning method. When you cease to ask questions, you cease to exist to a great extent. Read activity by silently asking questions as you read. Questioning immerses you into the material you are reading and therefore will expand your mental capacities more than almost anything else.

The philosopher Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” Improving your reading comprehension is the key to gaining important knowledge and making the most of your education. So pick up a book... and a pen.

5 Tips for Success

Tips 3-4

Tip 3: Do research

Literary crisis have written vast numbers of analytical and critical pieces on countless books. If you’re having trouble understanding a particular text, do some research and see what knowledgeable sources have to say about it. In addition to increasing your comprehension, you’ll also be showing initiative, something teachers always like to see. Always use legitimate a scholarly sources, not condensed study guides. Going the extra mile in your research elevates your achievement 10-fold.

Tip 4: Use a Dictionary

Make sure you have access to a dictionary when you’re reading. You can figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word by using context clues, but sometime you cant. Rather than simply skipping over the words you don’t know, take the time to look them up. The results are well worth the effort. Your comprehension will increase greatly, and you’ll build your vocabulary at the same time.

The Three Don’ts

Don’t Whine

Don’t Complain

Don’t Make Excuses

-John Wooden

Reflection

When we choose the right one should be positive about their decisions. One should not “whine complain or make excuses” as John Wooden mentioned. When we do any of these things we are choosing the wrong. One should be grateful as they are choosing the right, because if otherwise it’s just like making the wrong decisions anyways. It is not right to whine or complain because if you are going to do so then why even make that decision. There is no excuse for choosing the wrong. There is nothing that makes choosing the wrong a good decision. Under no circumstance is it right, never.

Tips 3-5

3. Set Attainable Goals

If you are having trouble writing a 25-page paper for class because it seems like such a big job, don’t focus on that final number. Break the paper down and consider each section of your paper individually. You can handle any project in small chunks.

4. Find a Social Support network

Create a group of people around you who want to help you succeed. Mentors can be teachers or family friends who can give you guidance and help you develop new skills. Counselors can help you with planning your courses and starting to explore colleges. You can also reach out to friends and peers who can motivate you by listening and sharing ideas.

5. Acknowledge Your Accomplishments

Give yourself a quick reward when you complete an assignment or task. Take a walk, send an email, get a snack. Then move on to the next project.

“You have only always to do what is right. It will become easier by practice, and you enjoy in the midst of your trials the pleasure of an approving conscience.”

-Robert E. Lee

Reflection

I believe that this quote explains it all. It says it all in only two sentences. We have to do nothing other than choose the right. No matter what we have to choose the right. It may not be as easy at the beginning but as you start choosing the right, it becomes easier. The more you choose the right the easier it becomes. By choosing the right you get to enjoy from it. You will have a clear conscious. There will be nothing to worry about or anything that bothers you with a clear conscious. An example would be doing well in an exam without cheating. That exam may have helped you passed the class. You deserved it because you studied hard for it. But if you had cheated on the exam and passed the class because of cheating them your conscious would bother you every time you took a look at your grade because you would remember that it took cheating to get that grade and you don’t deserve it. You’ve chose the wrong. That is the reason we should always chose the right, to get good outcomes and have a healthy conscious.

Part 3

Take Advantage of Any Free Time

If you have a study period or a long bus ride, use the time to review notes, prepare for an upcoming class or start your homework. Flash cards are a great learning tool. They are easy to make, easy to handle, and are a marvelous tool to help you learn and remember anything. Punch a hole in the upper left corner of each index card and connect the stack of your flash cards with a ring. Then the cards are bound and not flopping around. Flash cards bound like this act like a small book with pages. You can even have separate ringed stacks for each subject. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO REMEMBER, PUT IN ON A CARD.

Study with a Friend

Get together with a friend and classmates to quiz each other, compare notes and predict test questions. Consider joining a study group.

Communicate

If you have concerns about the amount or type of homework you have, you may want to talk to your family, teachers or counselor. They can help you understand how much time you need to allot for homework and how to manage your tasks.

Celebrate Your Achievements

Reward yourself for hitting milestones, or doing something well.

“Be always sure you’re right, then go ahead.”

-Davy Crockett

Reflection

I believe that this is very well said. If you believe that it is the correct thing to do then go ahead and do it. You have to make sure that it is correct before doing anything. Don’t go ahead and make an action unless you are sure that what you are going to do is correct. Once you are sure that what you are about to do is the correct then go ahead and do it, otherwise, don’t do it.

Part 2

Keep Things in Perspective

Know how much Weight each assignment or test carries, and use your time accordingly. Don’t waste time, but be wise and smart. Doing the most important things first is being wise and smart.

Bet More Involved

Keep your mind from wandering by taking notes, underling sections, discussing topics with others or relating your homework to something you’re studying in another class. Learn actively and not passively. Be anxiously engaged in your studies and you will have a great experience. Demonstrate a good attitude towards home assignments, and you will begin to love doing it.

Organize the Information

People process information in different ways. Some people like to draw pictures or charts to digest information, others prefer to read out loud or make detailed outlines. Try to find the methods that work best for you. Ask your teacher for recommendations if you’re having trouble.

“Character is higher than intellect.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reflection

This quotes claims that character is much for important that intellect. One is most definitely identified by their character rather than how intelligent one is. We should take in consideration that character takes a huge part in our lives. Although it is important to expand our knowledge we can never forget to keep working on our character. Character lands above intellect. Having a great character may lead you farther than having great intellect.

Take Control of Homework Part 1

Take Control of Homework

So It Doesn’t Control You

Part 1

Although very few students love homework, it does serve a purpose. Homework helps you:

·         Reinforce what you’ve learned during the day.

·         Build study habits that are essential in college.

·         Prepare for our classes.

·         Get a sense of program.

·         Here are some tips to help you deal with homework more efficiently and effectively.

Set the Mood

Create a good study area with everything you need (for example, a calculator). If you don’t have a quiet place at home, try your school or local library.

Know Where to Begin

Make a list of everything you need to do, and note all deadlines. Do the more difficult assignments first, so you don’t have to face them at the end.

Study at the Same Time Every Day

Even if you don’t have homework every night, use the time to review notes. If sitting down to work is part of your normal routine, you’ll approach it with less dread. Also, you’ll become a pro at using time productively.

As soon as class ends, review your notes and fill in any blanks.

Underline, highlight and use symbols to sort through the information. If you don’t understand something, get help from your teacher or classmates.

After you’ve receives all your notes from class, in the left-hand area of the page write down key words and questions your teacher might ask on a test.

At the bottom of each page, write a summary of the notes. This helps you digest what you’ve learned. It also improves your memory of the material for the long term and for tests down the road.

“He listens well who takes notes.”

-Dante Alighieri

Reflection

I strongly agree with this quote from Alighieri. I believe that when one is taking notes they are listening at their best. It is easy to try to listen to lesson and get distracted or not fully pay attention. When you are writing notes and what they are saying you automatically pay closer attention because you have to get what they are saying in a piece of paper. Taking notes it’s great because not only are you paying closer attention but you now have notes to go over whenever you need to.

Note-Taking Strategies Part 2

Note-Taking Strategies Part 2

During Class

One approach that has been proven effective is called the Cornell Note-Taking System. Here are some of its methods.

Start by using the main section of your page to take down your notes during class. Be sure to leave space on the left side of the page and the bottom. Things to keep in mind:

1.     Get the speaker’s main points. Don’t write down every word you hear.

2.     Leave blanks in your notes to add explanation later

3.     Organize as you write. Pay attention to cues such as repetition and emphasis.

4.     Indicate main and supporting points as you go.

5.     Jot down key vocabulary, important facts and formulas.

6.     Ask questions. If you’re confused, it’s better to ask while the material is fresh in your mind.

Preparing For College

Preparing For College

I have felt much stressed out lately. Time has been going by so quickly. Reality hits me whenever people talk to me about college. Realizing that this same year I will be becoming a senior and applying for college definitely scares me. I have a GPA of 3.8 which honestly makes me feel disappointment in myself. I know I could have done better but it does nothing to help it now if I dwell on what could have been. I would like to bring it up to at least a 4.0. The only thing I can do now is try my best to get A’s in my three AP classes. It is honestly very challenging. I am disappointed of the C I currently have in my AP English class but I know I can bring it up. I have also decided to take classes during the summer to bring my GPA higher. The problem is that I am also doing an internship this summer, and in addition I will be working with my aunt up in Salinas, CA for about a week. What I have to do is check the schedules of the classes ELAC is offering and try to make it all work. It will be a challenge and as much as I don’t want to stress about it, it definitely does get to me. On top of all the planning for the summer, I still have to worry about the current classes I am taking and preparing for all the big tests coming up such as the AP Tests, SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject. I honestly feel exhausted. I am tired of working hard, overthinking and spending a lot of time all the extracurricular activities I am doing such as volunteering, clubs, and sports. I am fed up with it all. BUT it will all be done. It will all be worth it. AND at the end I will look back and be proud of myself. It will all be over soon, faster than what I can imagine and I know it. It will seem very challenging but I know these will also be my best years and I will make the best memories through it all.

“When you believe you can—you can.”

-Dr. Maxwell Maltz

Reflection

I really like this quote and totally agree with it. I believe that one can do as much as he believes he can do. You have to believe in yourself and believe that you will get something done for it to get done. If you don’t believe then no one else will and you will never get anything done. Once you start to believe that you can do it; then you start to take action towards accomplishing whatever it is that you want to accomplish. You believing that you can do it keeps you motivated along the way. If one stops believing that they can do something then they will never accomplish it. As long as you BELIEVE then you can.

Note-Taking Strategies Part 1

Note-Taking Strategies Part 1

How to Get Your Class Notes into Shape

Getting the most out of high school and college means, studying hard and using your time in class wisely. An effective not-taking strategy can help you do both. Here are the basics.

Stay Organized

It may seem obvious, but your class notes can only help you if you can find them. When you’re taking notes be sure to:

§  Keep all your notes in one place

§  Date and number pages; keeping them in order makes it easier to understand them later.

Before Class

Review the materials assigned for that class period thoroughly. Bring a list of any questions you may have.
