Jocy.

I am an 11th grader who attends Linda Marquez High School. I am a hard worker at school. I try to be as involved as I can, such as being in part of school clubs. I am also in the school's varsity basketball team. I love basketball, Thai tea, and Italian food. I hope to attend UCLA after graduating high school. I wish to have a successful career as a doctor. I am a very optimistic person. I was blessed with the best people in the world, which i am lucky to call my family and friends. I wish nothing but the best for myself, and i am excited for the future!

“Gold medals don’t make champions… hard work does.”

-Anon

Reflection

Having heard this quote multiple times, it always motivates me to work harder. I definitely agree with this quote. A gold metal does not mean that a person is a champion. A gold metal does not define a person. A person has to work hard to be great. Once they have work hard they are champions because they deserve it. A metal is an award for that hard work.

Read Between the Lines

Make a judgment about the site’s reliability based on your own analysis of the site and the information it contains. Here are some ways to this:

Ø Look for facts you know or can check with a trusted source. If the site gets those facts right, it’s more likely that the other facts on the site are also accurate.

Ø Study the language used. Is it angry, satiric or overly impassioned? This may indicate that the site is biased.

Ø Consider whether the arguments are logical and backed up by evidence, and whether the site presents only one point of view.

Ø Check the links to the sources that the author acknowledges. Scholarly writing, whether in print or online, should include a bibliography.

“Continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking our potential.”

-Liane Cordes

Reflection

It does not matter how smart one may be or the countless opportunities one is given that will expose their potential. Effort takes you way farther than any strength. What is intelligence good for it you are not challenged into improving and doing your part by putting effort? It is only when one puts effort into everything they do is when they can realize their true potential.  An example of this would be that one may be the smartest kid in a high school campus but if they don’t constantly put effort into school they won’t ever know what their potential is and won’t get very far. It is a good brain thrown to waste.

Research with Attitude

Conduct your research with the attitude of a skeptic. As you examine websites for clues that they’re trust worthy, ask those questions:

·         Who wrote the Web page? If you can’t identify the individual or organization responsible for the information, don’t use it.

·         What are the author’s qualifications for writing on the subject?

·         As the article passed through an editorial process designed to ensure quality and accuracy?

·         What is the website’s purpose? Look for motives

·         --Like selling products or winning votes – that could result in biased or incomplete information.

·         Is the information accurate? Is it up-to-date?

·         Where did the author get this information?

Using the Web Wisely

Thanks to the Web, information is easy to find. However, it’s also easy to post something online. Anyone can do it.

You’ve probably used the Internet to do research for a paper, toy help you decide which product to buy, or to form an opinion about current events. Looking up information online is fast and convenient t. But when you do online research, it’s important to find sites you can trust.

Many websites claim to have the facts, but are full of errors. Other present information in a biased way – they only give one side of an argument. How can you tell a reliable source from an unreliable one?

Also, it is critical that you post online only that which is decent and appropriate, never anything pornographic, vulgar, indecent, out of taste, untruthful, or obscene. Post those things that will make a good name for you and your organization, that will promote goodwill and be of benefit to the world.

“When an archer misses the mark, he turns and looks for the fault within himself. Failure to hit the bull-eye is never the fault of the target. To improve your aim, improve yourself.”

Reflection

We all have goals and when we don’t reach them that mean that we need to be better to do so. One has to improve themselves, maybe more practice and harder work. If we improve ourselves we can get closer to our goals until reaching them. We can’t put the blame on anything else but our selves. We are the reason why we do or don’t reach a goal.

Recite

At the end of each section, look up from the text and in your own words recite an answer to your question for that section. Then write down your answer. Be sure to provide examples that support it.

Now repeat the Question, Read and Recite steps for each section of the chapter. First ask a question for the next section. Then read to find the answer. Finally, recite the answer in your own words and jot it down. The written questions and answers can help you study in the future.

Review

After completing the chapter, review your notes. Identify the main points by looking for the most important idea in each section. Recite, or write, a brief summary of the assignment.

Review your study notes every week to help you remember the information. When it’s time to prepare for your tests, you’ll find you’ve created an invaluable study guide.
