Getting the Most Out of Session

Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study session:

·        Decide what you’re going to do in advance.

·        Prepare for the session, so you can make the most of your time together.

·        Take turns teaching, to reinforce your own knowledge.

·        Stick to the session topic.

By supplementing your individual study with a study group, you can reinforce what you’ve learned, deepen your understanding of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages to do your best and to achieve on a high level, one who pushes you to try a little harder and be a little better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life, then those people are not friends, (they are actually your enemies), and you must avoid them at all cost. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.

Guidelines for Getting a Group Together

Here are some guidelines for creating and running a study group: How many? Create a group of four to six people. In a larger group, it’s easy for someone to get left out and smaller groups can too easily get off track.

Who? Pick classmates who seem to share your interest in doing well academically. Look for people who stay alert in class, take notes, ask questions and respond to the teacher’s questions. Include someone who understands the material better than you and can explain the concepts and someone who doesn’t understand it as well, to whom you can explain the material.

Where? Hold study group sessions in a place that is free of distractions and that has room to spread out books and notes. How long? Meet for no more than two to three hours at a time. Having a time limit helps the group focus. If you know you only have an hour, you’re more likely to stay on task.

When? Try to meet regularly, on the same day and time each week. Treating the study sessions as you would other activities helps you to keep to a schedule and ensures that everyone attends.

Reflection

There’s no better way on working on something than with other people. What Helen Keller portrays with this quote is that when one is alone there is only so much you can do, but with the help of others those achievement dramatically increase. Putting more heads together and more ideas create something greater. Different people have different perspectives and when you put that together it gives a good result. Not only that, but when working with others you have them to lean on and support.  Maybe someone is better at one thing where the other person isn’t strong at, and it balances it out. An example would be my basketball team. When we’re on the court, we have to work as a team. If any of us try to make all the shots and not pass the ball, nothing will be done. When we communicate well and work together we win games.

Work Together. There are a number of ways that you can ensure you get the most out of your educational experience. First, participate fully. Engage regularly in the discussions and be willing to share your personal, professional and educational experiences. You can get to know your classmates through the dialogue that is creates in a course environment- sometimes even better than in a face-to-face class. And the same goes for your instructor. Be sure to contact your professor- especially if you are having problems. He/she is still your instructor and will be there to guide and assist you as needed.

Work Together

Part 1

I can and will work as part of the team as long as everyone in the team is willing to do his work. I don’t like having to pick up the slack, but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was the longest paper I had ever been assigned and I was a little scared. Also, it was the first paper where they were like; here you go, just write about something. I had to argue in favor of or against something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on this paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research or writing. I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just under 12 pages but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week or so later, I had received the first A+ of my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserved. I was really happy and proud of myself.
