Honesty is always the best policy. Employers need to know that they can trust you with everything from company credit cards to trade secrets. How can you work at honesty? You demonstrate integrity every day that you do your own homework and resist the temptation to cheat on exams.

Master the moments and you may be a real pro when it comes to juggling the many demands on your time – classes, homework and activities – with some family help. College gives you an even bigger chance to sharpen your time management skills by doing it all on your own. And that’s a good thing since most jobs require multitasking. You might need to take care of current clients while attracting new ones, respond to e-mails while working on a major presentation, or order tomorrow’s produce while planning next week’s menu.

Someone said “Wherever you are, be there.” Focus on the present moment and give it all your attention. Don’t let your mind drift and wander here and there when you need to be thinking and concentrating on the moment at hand. You can’t go back and recapture this moment, so make the most of it while it NOW. Master the present and you will master the future. Work smart by mastering the present moment.

Additional Tips

Although working and going to school is challenging, it can be a rewarding experience if you use some foresight. These tips can help you handle the situation and make the most of your time:

Discuss your plans with your family. Balancing the demands of school and work is easier with their support.

Start slowly; don’t commit to working a lot of hours immediately.

Avoid time conflicts by planning your class and work schedules as far ahead of time as possible.

Use your time efficiently. You can use 10 mminutes waiting in a line to go over a few pages of assigned reading. If your job has a lot of downtime and your boss has no objection, you can use slow periods to do schoolwork.

If you commute to your job on public transportation, bring your schoolwork with you so you can work along the way.

Be flexible and willing to make sacrifices. You may have to cut down on some other things youd like to do because of school and work commitments.

If you have too much on your plate, admit it. Then cut back as needed.

Schedule relaxation time. Everyone needs some downtime to stay happy and healthy.

He reminds students that “the activities and courses students choose vary considerably, so it’s important for young people to keep their individual situations clearly in mind.” MacGowan continues, “For example, student actors should allow for the fact that they won’t have so much time during performance seasons. Student athletes need to remember the times of the year that they’ll be tied up with games and practices. Other students who are in classes that make considerable demands outside of the classroom must keep that reality in mind.”

Brad MacGowan, of the Career Center at Newton North High School in Massachusetts, thinks that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibility.” you can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money,” he says. “in most cases, you can acquire a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skilled and experiences.” In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you.

School Comes First

Schoolwork, including homework and studying for tests, should always be your top priority. MacGowan cautions students who do decide to work, “If you are rushing through your assignments…or not studying enough for tests because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less time-consuming job.”

Like many high school students, you may want- or need- to work part time. Working takes a lot of time and energy, though, so before getting a job, make sure that you think about your ability to handle both work and your education.

Important Considerations

You have to weigh a number of factors when deciding whether to take on apart-time job. It’s important to get as much information as possible, so you can figure out what choice makes the most sense for you.

Schedule a meeting with your school counselor to discuss the idea of working. Talk to your counselor about why you want to work and what type of position you’re seeking.

Reflection

There’s no better way on working on something than with other people. What Helen Keller portrays with this quote is that when one is alone there is only so much you can do, but with the help of others those achievement dramatically increase. Putting more heads together and more ideas create something greater. Different people have different perspectives and when you put that together it gives a good result. Not only that, but when working with others you have them to lean on and support.  Maybe someone is better at one thing where the other person isn’t strong at, and it balances it out. An example would be my basketball team. When we’re on the court, we have to work as a team. If any of us try to make all the shots and not pass the ball, nothing will be done. When we communicate well and work together we win games.

Part 1

I can and will work as part of the team as long as everyone in the team is willing to do his work. I don’t like having to pick up the slack, but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was the longest paper I had ever been assigned and I was a little scared. Also, it was the first paper where they were like; here you go, just write about something. I had to argue in favor of or against something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on this paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research or writing. I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just under 12 pages but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week or so later, I had received the first A+ of my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserved. I was really happy and proud of myself.
